A few photos

On Sunday the 11th We went for a little drive around to look at stuff.

There was an excellent church near Guimaraes in a village the name of which escapes me now. They had choir music piped from somewhere and nearby someone with a loud car stereo was having a face off with some bad dance music. This is a detail of the angels above the main entrance.

We went to the pre Roman settlement. Extensive walls and stuff and lots of these guys.

And lots of these.

Big they were, as much as a large rat.

Then we went here.

The weather was a bit cloudy, but that only served to make it more stunning. set on the top of the hill it has steps (a lot of them) leading up from Braga. It also has these two statues set even higher on either side of the steps. Set apart and at such a scale as if to welcome giants to the place built in their honour.

We had a picnic by the one on the right. Nice quiche.

The JCB dream

I awaken about 4 am and hear a lot of traffic. This prompts me to look out of window and I get caught for 5 minutes just watching the cars go by on the dual carriageway, surprised at how many there are. There is heavy rain and the cars plough through water as they race up to East Kilbride or down towards Glasgow. Then from the Glasgow direction I see a tracked JCB digger moving at about 50 kph whilst the cabin is rotating at a steady speed as the main vehicle follows to road. The digging bucket is positioned about half a metre from the ground and when it has gone past my position by about 20 metres, it veers to the right, the crosses the central reservation, the bucket gouging the earth as it goes. It then climbs/digs out of the road into the estate and still rotating crashes through the wall of a house, entering the house. I can hear it progressing for a few moments and then I run downstairs to get everyone upstairs to safety. There seem to be rather a lot of people in my living room. I borrow a phone to dial 999, call speak to a knowledgeable officer. There is more, was more. Sadly, it is unravelling as I type.

It were one just like this one wot did it ossifer

Back to Scotland and a bit of a rant

The last few weeks I have neglected the whole blog thing. Mainly because I was busy doing stuff. That has probably got to be a good thing. Now I am back in the UK, and I think my nasty flu thing that appeared on the way back has begun to subside. Spent most of Friday fairly incoherent, and Saturday completely incoherent and in bed. Watched “Donnie Darko” tonight, partly in response to the 20 minutes or so that I watched of a dreadful film called “Hostel”.
I’m sorry, but how shit like that gets made I’ll never know. They put kids into therapy for the most trivial of thought crimes and yet the monsters who conceive this twisted amoral crap walk our streets and pollute our TV screens. I’m not squeamish about horror movies, I just happen to think if you are going to make that kind of film it should have a purpose other than to shock and cauterise our feelings. I’m not big on gore, I’m particularly not big on such overly simplistic demonisation of characters in an attempt to engage your feeling for survival or destruction of the two dimensional barely considered roles. I’ve seen five minutes walk on parts receive more character development that this. There is a reason for this though. This movie is about brutality and fear. This is a film screaming out to be banned. “Tarentino presents” my arse.

The details of my last weeks in Portugal I will try to put together for here, photos and stuff.
I’ll be in touch
