Tocsin! getting alarmed about not much: November 2008

erm yeah

Wednesday night we went to see Ladytron at the ABC in Glasgow. Apart from a slightly questionable sound level on the girls' keyboards, and possibly monitors too, it was a good gig. The night before, SB had a small automotive hex vented on her making her exhaust decompose and blades fly into my tyre. From this, I took a weird "I'm fixing things!" pleasure from. Nice to make things, even if they are clunky brackets hammered out of scrap sheet steel.
The rest of the week has been me finally joining the hoards of small furry quadrupeds fleeing the USS XP for fear of the fast arriving prison ship USS Vista.
So, I have aquired an old dell, thank you Dr D, which needs to be rehoused so I can get normal AGP and PCI cards onto it, I have downloaded open office and found a linux driver for my vodafone 3G modem.
Joy.

This week I have watched Season one of Bones and started reading Arthur Waley's translation of Wu Ch'eng-en "Monkey". Finally that TV series makes sense.

Lazy blogger

I've been a little lazy on the blog front. Not a huge lot to say, the latest HP update seems to make my laptop hang on closing down, which is nice. As far as I know they have never bothered to redress the problem of the credential security manager reporting that a core module hasn't been passed by HP security.
So it always asks you if you want to run it. Which is a bit like going to the shop to buy milk and the checkout girl asking you if you really want milk today in that suspicious "you know it's bad for you" way.
I'm wading through Map Maker Pro as my GIS skills are a bit under used and I'm hoping that having some sort of database meets cartographic ability will make me a lot sexier to potential employers.

Digital Radio

I meant to put this up last week, but kinda got side tracked.
I was a guest at Digital Domination on Subcity Internet Radio on the 8th of November. Which I enjoyed, but was a bit confused by their 1967 moon landing type equipment. The most retro looking headphones I have ever used.
If you are interested, the shows are available by date at Digital Domination
I will be back at the end of the month :) and you should check the station out live every Saturday 8 - 9 pm and clickable thereafter.

Compounding my problems

So here I am, creature without portfolio, scanning the jobs and recruitment pages looking for that role that will utilise my knowledge base or transferable skills. It's all a bit crap really, as you would think people would just look and say, Hmmm PhD, recognised in the field. Ability to learn and surpass present knowledge base. No, they don't. they say Hmmm PhD in XXXX, pity it's not in XXYY as that's really our field. Then they take on the kid with HNC with the full knowledge they will train the bugger for 2 years upon which he'll sod off for a better paid more senior role.
So imagine my shock when I see a role for a Cold Fushion Developer. I am all for renewable energy sources, but aside from some unrepeated reports of a Russian physicist's success I have heard nothing more about this harnessing of the sun to supply our needs.I should note that in the link I have put here, they don't even acknowledge ultrasound related cavitation bubble implosion.
Then I realised Cold Fushion is also a macromedia package. So, it's a web developer position. Of course, if I was a spider I might easily have similar shock when I see the amount of web developer posts on the internet. I might even get as bitter and disenchanted. Sit there, grumbling about the positions I could be doing whilst making gravy.

The Annual Ironic Guy Fawkes Celebration

It’s that time of the year when we celebrate the fact that someone’s plan to blow up the houses of Parliament was foiled by blowing things up. This means that the country becomes even more of an explosion hazard than it usually is from about late September until the middle of November. The funniest part is the proportion of these that are set off during the hours of daylight. So it’s obviously kids letting these off, and I really hope it isn’t adults who are firing rockets (mortars to them) at me as I drive by. What right thinking sane person wouldn’t like to sell explosives to children? What special kind of mental thinks year in and year out that the list of people damaged by these things is acceptable?

Went to see Hanoi Rocks the other night on their farewell tour…

The support bands, for there were two to endure, were sadly rather formulaic. Friend said it was Glam by numbers. Sadly true, and staying with the painting by numbers analogy, it all resulted in one of those apparently amusing pictures of dogs playing snooker in a gentleman’s club.
Hanoi were good though. Making the right noises. Mike Monroe was looking better than the last time I saw him, which made me happy. The only stuff I had little time for was the sentimental stuff. But that’s because I’m getting a bit jaded with the years. I hope he’s ok. They should have been bigger. They deserved to be.
Hmmmm

On my weekend...

My lack of posting up until now is a shocker. Went to Bedlam on Saturday night with the reworked Anubis costume. This really amounted to cutting the snout and ears off of the mask I made in Portugal and correcting the angle error that previously led to me looking more like Gothic Eyore. I was too lazy to make a collar; but strangely had enough time to find a hieroglyph translator so that I could print rude messages as hieroglyphs onto iron on transfers which then went on a T shirt. Such a child I know. Friends P&G are in the photo below as a mummy and Tank Girl. You will also see a rather groovy Silent Hill nurse. Who must have been one of the creepiest and consistently in character people (entities?) there. SB was an excellent bat with fantastically flappy wings, but I don’t have a picture. Bottoms!!!

Sunday, went to see Shellac who were very good. Really weird crowd. Seemed to be a lot of very normal looking girls and boys. There was also a psycho with more menace than your average PCP’d knife wielding maniac, but thankfully he rapidly disappeared. I have to admit my favourite stuff is from the singles and “At Action Park” and they played a lot of it. They carried on, seemed to have fun and were extraordinarily tight.
